What Happens at a Suit Fitting (and What a Good Tailor Checks)

A fitting is where a suit starts to become yours. Here's what happens at each fitting, what a good tailor checks, and how to get the most from yours.

The first time you try on a half-made jacket covered in chalk marks and loose stitches, it can look a little alarming. Don't worry — that's exactly how it should look. The fitting is where a suit stops being a pattern and starts being yours.

At ITORVANI, fittings are included in the price. Usually two: a basted first fitting to check how the cloth falls, then the finished garment. A third fitting is added at no extra charge if needed.

Fitting One: The Basted Fitting

The jacket is basted — held together with long, temporary stitches. There are no finished buttonholes yet, and that's on purpose: everything can still move. You put it on, stand the way you normally stand, and we chalk changes straight onto the cloth while you wear it.

What a Good Tailor Checks

  • Shoulders — the jacket should sit flat on your shoulders, with no dent just below the shoulder seam.
  • Collar — it should hug the back of your neck, not stand away from your shirt collar.
  • Chest and waist — close enough to look sharp, loose enough to button without the cloth pulling into an X.
  • Sleeves — usually long enough to show a little shirt cuff.
  • Jacket length — long enough to cover your seat.
  • Trousers — the waist, the seat, and how the hem falls on your shoes.
  • Sitting down — a suit that pulls when you sit doesn't fit, so expect to be asked to sit.

Fitting Two: The Finished Suit

You try on the finished suit. We check the chest, the lapel and the sleeve length again. Anything still not right is chalked and fixed before you take it home — and if it needs another round, a third fitting is added at no extra charge.

How to Get the Most From a Fitting

  • Wear the shirt and shoes you'll wear with the suit. They change how the sleeves and trousers should sit.
  • Bring what you carry every day, like your phone and wallet. They change how the jacket hangs.
  • Stand normally. Standing up extra straight feels polite, but the suit should fit the way you really stand.
  • Say what you feel. Tight under the arm? Loose at the waist? Tell us — that's what the fitting is for.

Short on Time?

Usually 3–4 days, with two to three fittings. 48-hour express service is available for travelers on a tight schedule — two fitting. Tell us your travel dates when you book, and we'll plan the fittings around them. If getting to the shop is hard, we can do the consultation and measurements at your hotel in Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam or Riverside.

A fitting takes a little time, but it's the part that makes a suit fit. Everything before it is a plan; the fitting is where the plan meets your body.
