How to Care for a Bespoke Suit in Bangkok's Humidity (Without Babying It)

Your suit doesn't need to live in a plastic bag and never touch the sun. Here's how to actually keep it in shape in a tropical climate.

A bespoke suit is meant to last years, not seasons. In Bangkok, that promise runs straight into 80–90% humidity for most of the year, a rainy season that seems to specifically target the one day you're wearing wool, and air conditioning that swings your suit between a sauna and a walk-in fridge multiple times a day. None of that has to ruin a good suit. It just means the care routine written for a London closet doesn't fully apply here.

Let It Rest Between Wears

Wool actually cleans itself, to a point — fibers release odor and moisture if you give them time and air. The single most useful habit is not wearing the same suit two days in a row. Hang it somewhere it can breathe for at least a day before it goes back on, and it'll hold its shape and smell far longer than one suit worn on repeat.

Use the Right Hanger, Not Just Any Hanger

A wire or thin plastic hanger lets a jacket's shoulders slump out of shape over time — and in humidity, cloth holds whatever shape it's left in more readily. A broad, curved wooden hanger supports the shoulder line properly and lets air circulate through the jacket, which matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Steam Instead of Iron

Direct heat from an iron can flatten wool's texture and leave a shine, especially on lighter tropical-weight cloth. A hanging steamer — or simply hanging the suit in a bathroom during a hot shower — relaxes wrinkles without pressing the life out of the fibers. It's gentler, and honestly it's less effort too.

Dry Clean Less Than You Think You Should

Frequent dry cleaning is one of the fastest ways to wear out a good suit — the solvents strip natural oils from the wool over time. Brushing the jacket with a soft clothes brush after each wear and airing it out handles most day-to-day maintenance. Save actual dry cleaning for a handful of times a year, not after every wear.

Storing During Rainy Season

  • Skip sealed plastic garment bags for long-term storage — they trap moisture against the cloth, which is exactly what you don't want in a humid climate.
  • Use breathable cotton garment bags instead, or leave suits uncovered in a closet with some airflow.
  • A few silica gel packets in the closet do more for a wool suit here than almost anything else you can buy.
  • If a jacket gets caught in the rain, let it air-dry on a wooden hanger away from direct sun — don't rush it with a hairdryer or leave it balled up in a bag.

Why Construction Matters Here Too

This is where good construction pays for itself. A floating canvas — a layer of horsehair and wool hand-padded into the chest — moves with the body and breathes well in humid weather. It's one more reason construction quality matters as much as the fabric on top of it.

None of this requires babying the suit or treating it like a museum piece — it's meant to be worn. A little airflow, the right hanger, and going easy on the dry cleaner will keep a well-built suit looking sharp for years in this climate. If a suit's fit has changed or something needs adjusting after time in Bangkok's weather, our Alterations page covers what we can fix on garments we didn't originally make, too.
