Walk through Pratunam or Sukhumvit for an afternoon and you'll get quoted everything from a few thousand baht to well over thirty thousand for what, on a hanger, looks like roughly the same navy suit. This is the single most confusing part of buying a suit in Bangkok, and it's rarely explained honestly. So here's the plain version: what the price is actually paying for, and how to tell a fair quote from a bad one.
The Fabric Is Usually the Biggest Line Item
Wool content and weight (GSM) drive price more than almost anything else. A suit cut from 20% wool blend costs meaningfully less than one cut from 100% wool, and within 100% wool, mills price finer, more consistent yarns higher. This is also the easiest thing to compare across quotes — ask directly what percentage wool you're being shown, not just "is it good fabric."
Construction Is the Part Most People Never Ask About
This is where price differences that seem confusing actually make sense. There are three broad tiers:
- Fully canvassed — a floating chest piece, hand-padded and stitched in, that moves with your body and improves with age. The most labor-intensive and longest-lasting build.
- Half-canvas — canvassed through the chest, fused below. A lighter, more affordable drape that still holds shape reasonably well.
- Fused — the interlining is heat-pressed onto the cloth rather than sewn. Lighter, quicker and the most affordable — a good choice for suits you wear often and replace. Some tailors also build these on a standard block rather than a hand-drafted pattern, so it's worth asking.
Two suits can look identical hanging side by side and be genuinely different products once you know which of these three built them.
What Bespoke Pricing Actually Looks Like
Every price includes your paper pattern, all fittings, alterations until it fits, and free alterations for 6 months after you take it home. For reference, our own prices start from 4,000 THB per suit, for 4 Basic suits, and break down by wool content and construction:
- Basic (20% wool, 30% silk, 50% viscose) — 4,500 THB per suit, Custom-made construction.
- High End (80% / 60% wool blends) — 8,900 THB per suit, Half-canvas build.
- Premium (100% wool) — 13,900 THB per suit, Fully canvassed construction.
Ordering more than one suit at a time typically lowers the per-suit price too, since fittings and pattern work are shared across the order.
Red Flags Worth Knowing
- A price that seems far below everyone else's for "the same" 100% wool — ask what the construction actually is before assuming it's a deal.
- Zero fittings offered between measuring and collection. Fit is where bespoke earns its price; skipping it undermines the entire premise.
- Pressure to decide and pay in the same conversation you walked in. A shop confident in its work doesn't need to rush you.
- No clear answer on what happens if the finished suit doesn't fit properly.
How to Compare Quotes Fairly
Ask the same three questions at every shop: what percentage wool is this, what's the canvas construction, and how many fittings are included. Once you're comparing those three things directly instead of just a final number, the price differences across Bangkok's tailors stop being confusing and start making complete sense.
